Innocence is over-rated. Having been sheltered for most of my life, I didn't go through much of what others I am acquainted with have. Though, in the past five years, I have had to deal with such things first hand through the real-time experiences of those near and dear to me. Childhood abuse, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, addiction and withdrawal, mental illness...I have seen them all first hand, even if I was not the person experiencing it in the body. I have had a very quick education, and there is precious little I have left in the way of naivete, innocence, or true 'purity' of thought.
I don't say that this is a bad thing. Far from it.
I simply have had my life put into perspective lately.
My roommate, Candice, has started A.A. She poured out the bottles of alcohol she had left in the house. She has put herself on the road to a better day and a better life for herself. I am proud of her.
